Ghana Army’s (GA) 5 Infantry Battalion (5Bn) – Rear, Arakan Barracks, Burma Camp, led by the Commander Rear – Major Kwame Owusu-Afriyie, has presented assorted gifts to the Department of Social Welfare, Osu.

The Commander Rear led a team of Officers, Soldiers, Civilian Defence Staff and Magajias of the Unit on Thursday 29 December 2022, to donate an undisclosed amount of cash, Christmas cards, assorted drinks, food items and detergents to the Department, which were received by Madam Gifty Tekpor – Manageress in charge of the Department.

The Commander Rear in his address indicated that as part of activities to mark the end of year 2022, 5Bn decided to reach out to the less privileged to show love, as well as enhance Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), as part of extending seasonal greetings and well wishes to the children and staff of the Department.

Madam Tekpor in return said the Department has 4 divisions; 1) Shelter for Abused Children – a unit that provides for homeless and abandoned children, 2) Boys’ Remand Home – which is responsible for juveniles with pending court cases, 3) Junior Girls Correctional Centre – in charge of girls serving various custodial sentences and 4) South Labone Girls Vocational Training Centre – responsible for vocational training of needy and poor girls.

The Centre seeks to provide these young girls with skills in order to prevent them from engaging in crime, Madam Tekpor said, further indicating that the children with the Shelter for Abused Children are provided with care for about a year, after which they are linked to a foster home and parents for further care.

The Manageress on behalf of the children and staff expressed appreciation to the Unit for the donation and celebrating Christmas with the children.
