The Artillery Training School (ATRS) successfully completed a 3-week training in Forward Observation Skills for some personnel of the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) and Special Boat Squadron (SBS) of the Ghana Navy.

The 3 weeks training, which had been a roller coaster journey, and focused on introducing the operatives to the fundamentals of fire support, came to a successful end with a colourful closing ceremony on Friday 20th October 2023 at the Battle Training Camp (BTC), Bundase.

In his closing remarks, the Guest of Honour and Commander, ASOB – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Isaac Nicholas Paintsil, expressed joy at the overall performance of the operatives at the training.

He, however, admonished the trainees to deem the end of the training as the commencement of an exciting new chapter in their careers, which will be challenging, and to face any obstacle with fortitude and unwavering determination, as their training has prepared them.

He continued that they should not forget the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and discipline, and that they should remain vigilant in their duties, as the safety and success of their comrades depend on their expertise.

General Paintsil concluded that the operatives should bear the flame wherever their mission takes them, and continue to exemplify the core values of honour, courage, and integrity for which the Brigade stands.

In his welcome remarks, the Commanding Officer (CO) of the ATRS – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Patrick Atuiri, indicated that the overall objective of the training was for the observer to be able to accurately locate targets, understand which targets to attack, and effectively communicate what he sees to the rest of the fire support community.

He continued that, effective fire support requires an observer who understands the tasks to accomplish, and how these tasks support the overall operation.

A total of twenty-two (22) personnel were trained, after the operatives had been through an intensive training that developed their proficiency to call for fire and adjust fire accurately, navigate through simulations, practical exercises, and real-life scenarios, and thus equipped them to face the evolving challenges of the modern battlefield.
