“BE READY IN THE FACE OF EVOLVING SECURITY THREATS” – COAS TELLS JWS

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) – Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has charged troops of the Jungle Warfare School (JWS) in Achiase to be ready and prepared in the face of evolving security threats, urging them to remain vigilant and steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding their area of operations.

He said this when he paid his maiden visit to the school on Wednesday 27 March 2024, to gain first-hand knowledge of the institution’s role in shaping the strategic outlook of the Army.

Welcomed with military honours, the COAS engaged in a comprehensive briefing session, where he was apprised of ongoing operations, strategic priorities, and training initiatives undertaken by the JWS, which insights and perspectives provided a valuable opportunity for the COAS to know their operations, and the daunting challenges the school is facing.

Following the briefing, the COAS proceeded to hold a durbar with All Ranks, where he interacted directly with troops stationed at the JWS, allowing for candid discussions on matters ranging from operational challenges to welfare concerns, reinforcing the COAS’ commitment to prioritizing the well-being and morale of troops.

The interaction provided an invaluable opportunity for the troops to voice their concerns, share experiences, and seek guidance on matters ranging from operational challenges to career development.

Maj Gen BK Onwona emphasized the paramount importance of training and readiness in modern warfare scenarios, and commended the troops for their commitment to excellence, highlighting the pivotal role of the JWS, in sharpening the skills of military personnel across various branches.

In a proactive move toward enhancing inter-agency collaboration, the COAS advised troops to prioritize peaceful and constructive relations with the police and other security agencies, and underscored the shared objective of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, and protecting its citizens from internal and external threats.
In response, the Commanding Officer (CO) of the Unit – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Jacob Codjoe, expressed gratitude for the COAS’ visit and reaffirmed the dedication of JWS to advancing the school’s mission of imparting cutting-edge training and fostering leadership excellence.

He added that the school would continue to train Officers and Soldiers of GAF, in order to ensure that All Ranks are well equipped, to combat during jungle operations.

The CO however, outlined some challenges, and projections of the school which needed the assistance of Higher Command.

The COAS and his entourage toured the school to inspect ongoing projects, and also paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Achiase – Daasebere Gyenin Kantan II, and his Queen Mother – Ohemaa Darkoa III.
