The Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and President of Ghana – His Excellency (HE) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has congratulated Major General (Maj Gen) Anita Asmah, as a trailblazing Ghanaian military officer, who has made history by becoming the first African woman to be appointed as a United Nations (UN) Force Commander.
Maj Gen A Asmah paid a courtesy call on the C-In-C on Thursday 19 December 2024, where she announced her new role as the Head of Mission and Force Commander (FC) of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

During the meeting, Major General Asmah sought guidance from the President, who expressed his delight and congratulated her on her outstanding service and achievements, noting that 2024 has been remarkable for women in Ghana, highlighting General Asmah’s appointment, and the election of Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botwe as the Commonwealth Secretary General.
Maj Gen Asmah brings over 31 years of leadership experience in GAF and UN peacekeeping to her new role, being fluent in English and French, and has a strong educational background, having attended Aburi Girls Senior High School, and the University of Ghana, Legon, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law Degrees.

Present at the meeting included the Chief of the Defence Staff, GAF – Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong- Peprah, and the National Security Adviser – Brigadier General Emmanuel Okyere (Rtd).
