The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) – Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona commissioned a Young Soldiers’ accommodation unit for the 66 Artillery Regiment (66 Arty Regt), as part of his maiden visit to the Unit, and the Artillery Training School (ATRS), since he assumed Command of Ghana’s Army.
At the commissioning event on Thursday 14 March 2024, Maj Gen BK Onwona commended the Commanding Officer (CO) 66 Arty Regt – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Edward Sarpong Appiah – who is currently deployed in South Sudan for Peace Support Operations – for his vision and initiating the accommodation project for Soldiers under his command, as well as the Commander Rear – Lt Col Jalali Din Ibrahim, for completing the project.

The COAS, whose tour objective was to be familiarized with the Regiment’s Area of Operational Responsibility, the activities of the Training School, and to share his vision with the troops, took the opportunity to interact with troops and Defence Civilian Staff at a durbar.
He admonished troops to avoid actions such as betting, recruitment fraud, indiscipline, robbery and other vices that would lead them into trouble, and to be security conscious and alert, to keep a high level of situational awareness wherever deployed, and be conscious of their critical role to ensure that Ghana’s upcoming general elections are credible, before, during and after the polls.
In his opening remarks, the Commander Rear (Comd/R) of the 66 Arty Regt, indicated that, the project was initiated by Lt Col ES Appiah, through the Regiment’s own resources, with the benevolence of individuals and organizations, to alleviate the accommodation challenges of Young Soldiers of the Unit, who were previously housed in tents, at the mercy of harsh weather conditions.

Benefactors of the project include: Brigadier General (Brig Gen) NK Kporku; the Bank of Ghana; Mr Franklin Jose; Mr Eli Tsikata; Mr Christian Dohlin – Director of CK Constructions; Managing Director (MD), Diamond Cement; Forestry Commission, Jasikan; MD, From Home Company Ltd; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Liberty Company Ltd; Director Edwin Wood Production; CEO VFP; CEO Greenhouse Stone Quarry; and the CEO Tier Stone Quarry.
The COAS was accompanied by the General Officer Commanding, Southern Command (S/COMD) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Samuel Yeboah Asare; Commander, Army Training Command – Brig Gen Stephen Woseadzikpo Kweku Parbey; CO, ATRS – Lt Col Patrick Atuiri; Staff Officers of Army and S/COMD Headquarters.
