The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) – Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has embarked on a 3-day tour of deployments in the northern part of Ghana to familiarize himself with the operations of the Northern Command (N/COMD), and to avail him the chance to engage with troops of the various Units under the Command.
As part of his tour, which commenced from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 February 2024, the COAS paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon – His Royal Majesty, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama, where the COAS in an interaction stated that, upon assuming office, he deemed it fit to visit all Units under his command, to have firsthand information on their operations.

He further stated that, he considered it a priority to introduce himself to the Dagbon Overlord to seek for his blessings.
On his part, His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari, expressed appreciation to the COAS for the acknowledgement. He mentioned that peace and security was key to ensuring development of the area. He also urged the COAS to keep up with the good works of his predecessor.
The COAS proceeded to the office of the Northern Regional Minister – Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, where they had fruitful discussions relating to peace and security of the North, with the Regional Minister subsequently assuring the COAS of his unwavering support during his tenure, after which the COAS presented a plague to the Minister, to strengthen the bond between the Army and the Northern Region.

Maj Gen Onwona also visited the Army Special Operations Training School (ASOTS), Daboya, 69 Airborne Force (ABF), 6 Infantry Battalion (6Bn), 10 Mechanized Battalion (10 Mech Bn), Wa, 11 Mech Bn, Bolgatanga, 12 Mech Bn, Sandema, and 155 Armoured Regiment (Damango).
The COAS interacted with troops of these Units and assured them that together with his Staff Officers, he would do his utmost best to solve the logistics challenges they face in their operations.
He further highlighted his vision: “To maintain a cohesive, motivated, and well-rounded Ghana Army Capable of undertaking its mission”, to all personnel of the Command.
