DEPUTY MILAD PAYS WORKING VISIT TO UNISFA GHANBATT 2

The Deputy Military Adviser (MILAD), Office of Military Affairs, Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters, New York – Major General (Maj Gen) Ann Cheryl Pearce of the Australian Army, has visited the Second Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 2) serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), to familiarize herself with GHANBATT activities in ensuring UNISFA’s mandate in Sector South Area of Operation.

The Deputy MILAD, on Tuesday 14 May 2024, at the Battalion Headquarters, Athony Company Operating Base (COB), Abyei, inspected an Honour Guard on her arrival, after which she and her entourage were briefed on GHANBATT’s Operational Activities in ensuring UNISFA’s Mandate, by the Commanding Officer (CO) – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Edward Sarpong Appiah and his staff.

The Deputy MILAD in her remarks, commiserated with UNISFA, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) GHANBATT, and family of Late Sergeant Kyere Evans – who paid the ultimate price while keeping peace in Abyei.

She applauded the Unit for its proactivity in combining both operational and CIMIC activities as well as Community Engagements to win the heart and minds of the local communities within Sector South. She reminded the Unit on the UN Zero Tolerance Policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).

She also urged GHANBATT to continue exhibiting professionalism and dedication to uphold the goodwill of the GAF and the UN at large, and took the opportunity to commend the CO and the GHANBATT, for a good job done, wishing the Battalion well as they prepare to rotate soon.

Members of her delegation included Chief Joint Operations Centre UNISFA HQ, Lt Col KS Appiah, Chief U5 Force Headquarters (FHQ), Wing Commander D Istifanus, Commander Kylie Robson, Military Adviser to the DMILAD and some Section Chiefs from the Mission and FHQ.
