To further strengthen existing relationship with the local populace and as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity with the community, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mission in Gambia (ECOMIG) Ghanaian Company 8 (GHANCOY 8) has reconstructed the Banjul Terminal Mosque.

The commissioning ceremony for the mosque on Saturday 29 March 2025, had The Gambia’s Minister for Defence – Mr Modou Sering Njie as the Guest of Honour; and was supported by the ECOMIG Force Commander – Colonel (Col) Ngiagne Diouf, and the Contingent Commander, GHANCOY 8 – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Abraham Puoriyelle Dery.

The commissioning of the mosque, coinciding with the breaking of the Ramadan Fast, was met with joy and appreciation by attendees, reinforcing the spirit of community and shared faith.

The renovation initiative dates back to July 2024, when Mr. Manka Fabacary – Director of the Banjul Ferry Terminal, approached GHANCOY 8 with a request to assist in refurbishing the mosque, upon whose assessment, it became evident that the existing structure was inadequate for its growing congregation, thus a reconstruction would be more appropriate.

During the commissioning ceremony, Lt Col Dery highlighted the project’s deeper significance, describing it as a reflection of the commitment to peace, unity, and interfaith respect, and that beyond its physical structure, the mosque represents the enduring bond between GHANCOY 8 and the local community.

He also acknowledged the Gambian Defence Minister’s unwavering support, the cooperation of the ferry terminal’s management, and the guidance provided by the ECOMIG Force Commander.

The Contingent Commander reaffirmed GHANCOY’s dedication to fostering strong ties with the Gambian people and ensuring that the mosque remains a place of solace and inspiration for generations.

Mr Modou Sering Njie, in his address, lauded the collaborative effort that led to the mosque’s completion, and described the project as a testament to the deepening strategic partnership between The Gambia and ECOMIG.

The Defence Minister underscored the shared vision of regional peace and stability, affirming that initiatives like the reconstruction, strengthen the bonds of trust and cooperation between nations.

He extended appreciation to GHANCOY 8 for their dedication and to the ECOMIG Force Commander for his continued support.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Chief Imam of Banjul, the Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority, Staff Officers from ECOMIG Force Headquarters, and Staff of the Ferry Terminal Authority whose presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the collective effort invested in the project.
