Speaker of Ghana’s House of Parliament – Right Honourable (Rt Hon) Alban Sumani Bagbin has called for urgent and collective action to eliminate all forms of language barriers that has impeded socioeconomic growth within the West African sub-region over the years.
Rt Hon A.S. Bagbin made the call when a delegation of Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa paid a courtesy call on him, on Thursday 11 July 2024, as part of the programme line-up for the inaugural Meeting of Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana, from 9 to 11 July 2024.

Rt Hon Bagbin said although the linguistic diversity in West Africa is culturally enriching, it often poses challenges to effective communication and collaboration among Member States.
“Language should be a bridge, and not a barrier”, he emphasized, adding that the meeting of the Heads of National Boundary Commissions in West Africa was significant in addressing this challenge among others, and thus called for a broader collaboration and partnership concerning boundary-related matters in the sub-region.

The Speaker used the opportunity to assure the Ghana’s boundary commission of Ghana Parliament’s support, particularly in the area of legislation, to ensure efficient work of the commission.
The delegation was led by Major General Emmanuel Wekem Kotia – Commissioner General of the GhBC, who hosted the maiden Meeting, which had the objective of establishing mechanisms between national and regional actors, for a better articulation of implementation of border governance strategies in West Africa.
