The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Electrical Mechanical Technical Training School (EMETTS) has held a three-day Inter-Platoon Sports Competition, to foster camaraderie, unit cohesion, enhance leadership development and teamwork among students, and to identify potential sportsmen and women for the various GAF sports teams.
The 3-day tournament, took place at the Nicholson Sports Stadium and Complex Annex, Burma Camp, Accra, from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 27 March, 2024, with the Director, Joint Doctrine, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) – Colonel (Col) Ernest Nyuur as Guest of Honour for the closing ceremony.

The contest commenced on the first day with qualifiers in three sporting disciplines – soccer, volleyball and basketball – whiles the finals of the basketball and volleyball were held at the Nicholson Sports Complex Annex, and the climax of the competition in soccer and tug-of-peace, and the awards ceremony, at the Nicholson Stadium.
Speaking to the Unit after the competition, Col E Nyuur said, like other military institutions the world over, GAF holds dear the contribution of sports to the overall posture, wellbeing and espirit de corps amongst the rank and file of its troops.
He added that besides the contest enhancing sportsmanship among participants, boosting morale and combat readiness of participants, it would also give the students a break from the routine academic work, and unearth new talents who could be invited into the various GAF sports teams, and perhaps Ghana’s national teams.

Col Nyuur therefore, recommended that the other GAF schools emulate the event and take it a step further, where the various schools would compete amongst themselves.
Overall Best Player was won by Private Antwi Owusu Francis; Overall Best Platoon went to Hammer Platoon; Best in Football to Hammer Platoon; Best in Basketball to Punch Platoon; and Best in Volleyball to Spanner Platoon.
Present at the closing ceremony included the Director Materiel at the Training and Doctrine Command – Col Busy Boglo; Director Logistics, International Peace Support Operations – Col Augustine Awuku-Annie; the Commanding Officer, EMETTS – Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Ejedu Odoom, Officers, German Armed Forces Technical Assistance Group representative – Warrant Officer Class 2 Thomas Muller, Regimental Sergeant Majors, Staff and student of EMETTS.
