by Kofi Ampeah Woode

The outgone Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) – Vice Admiral (V/Adm) Seth Amoama, has expressed immense appreciation to personnel of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 11 for their professionalism, hard work, support and loyalty exhibited during his tenure of office.

The message was conveyed by the Ghanaian Contingent Commander (CONTICO) who also doubles as the UNMISS Sector West Commander – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Kweku Dankwa Hagan, when he held a durbar with personnel of the GHANBATT on Wednesday 31 January 2024, at the Battalion Headquarters Bentiu, South Sudan.

Additionally, the CONTICO, on behalf of the CDS, bid farewell to the troops in UNMISS, and updated personnel of the GHANBATT on the current security situation in South Sudan and Abyei.

He condemned the recent attacks of UN personnel in the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), which led to the demise of Sergeant Kyere Evans and another Pakistani Soldier, with others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The CONTICO urged personnel of GHANBATT to remain professional at all times, since the security situation in the country remains unpredictable, adding that there is a probability that the general elections in South Sudan will come off in December 2024, hence there is an urgent need for personnel of GHANBATT 11 to brace up towards any call on order.

In his closing remarks, the CONTICO emphasized the importance of this farewell message since his last visit to the GHANBATT HQ was barely 2 weeks ago.
