GAF COMMENCES FENCING OF ALL GARRISON LANDS

by Kofi Ampeah Woode

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commenced procedures to properly secure all of its lands to protect them from constant encroachment; by constructing fencing types of block-work, perimeter road, boundary establishments and chain-link perimeter demarcations in all Garrisons by collaborating with a private estate developer – GOLDKEY Properties Limited.

Making a presentation at a sod-cutting event to commence the endeavour on Wednesday, 1 February 2023 at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Albert Tekyi – Deputy Director, Engineering Services, GAF, said the lands, acquired during pre-colonial era, have seen a lot of encroachment – example being Burma Camp, which had a total area of 7000m², is now left with a residual land of 2000 m².

Lt Col Tekyi said for Burma Camp, there is the need to wall 14 kilometers using block work, same for the Afienya Gliding School, which has been encroached from the West Side; however, to wall the green area would preserve it for military purposes.

Bundase Training Camp (which is 60,000m²), 4 Infantry Battalion (4Bn) in Kumasi, Air Force Base, Takoradi, Afienya Gliding School, Afienya, face the same encroachment issues and will undergo same projects to protect military installation and land, while 4Bn, AFB Takoradi and Myohaung Barracks will have Chain-link fencing.

The Myohaung Barracks of 2 Infantry Battalion (2Bn) Apremdo, Takoradi, Western Region, has 60000 acres but is still threatened with encroachment issues, however, vast portions of the land is green and forestry in vegetation from the northeast and the southwest. The land being too huge to fence, a road is to be constructed around it as a perimeter road and boundary pillar markers installed.
