Ghana Army’s Combat Training School (ACTS) conducted the first Field Training Exercise (FTX) for its second batch of courses for 2024, in the general areas of Shai-Osudoku, Akuse and Asutsuare, to train students in the Organization, Maneuvering and Administration of a Battle Group in the field.
The exercise was conducted from 25 to 29 August 2024, for the Combat Team Commanders’ Course 2-24 (CTCC 2-24), Young Officers’ Course 2-24 (YOC 2-24), Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers’ Tactical Course 2-24 (ANCOTC 2-24), Basic Medium Machine Gun Course 1-24 (BMMGC 1-24), Basic Infantry Platoon Weapons Course 1-24 (BIPWC 1-24), and the Basic Mortar Course 2-24 (BMC 2-24).

The exercise, set at the Battle Group Level, and also involving personnel from Southern Command Units, 15 Armour Brigade and 37 Military Hospital, was designed to practice students in all phases of war, including defensive and offensive operations, employment of medium and heavy Infantry Platoon Weapons and Field Administration.
It tested students in 8km Advance-to-Contact, Withdrawal, the conduct of Fighting Patrols, Reconnaissance and a Deliberate Day Attack, as students were also physically challenged, in testing their ability to endure combat operations, in adverse conditions.

The exercise, which served as precursor for the Final FTX schedule for September 2024, also exemplifies the dedication of ACTS in providing comprehensive and realistic training experiences for students, during their courses.
The exercise not only honed the tactical skills of the students, but also fostered a culture of safety and preparedness, and highlighted the importance of adequate medical support during field exercises, to support the Infantry in difficult terrains.

The invaluable experience gained from this FTX will contribute to the enhanced readiness and effectiveness of the participants in their future roles within the Ghana Armed Forces.
