The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Ghana Army – Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has commissioned a newly built 4-unit 2-bedroom accommodation block at Idris Barracks, and the refurbished 4 Garrison Officers’ Mess Matambo at Danyame, Kumasi.
The COAS outdoored the two facilities for use on Friday 18 October 2024, with the assistance of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Central Command (C/COMD) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Michael Kwadwo Opoku.

The construction of the accommodation block was necessitated when fire razed down an entire wooden structure serving as accommodation for Soldiers, whiles the Matambo was closed down to make way for renovation works, due to deterioration of some parts of the structure.
Maj Gen BK Onwona, who expressed delight for the completion of the facilities, was emphatic that provision of accommodation for soldiers is his topmost concern as COAS, and would remain so for his tenure.

He continued to say that the completion of the accommodation was a testament to his unwavering commitment to providing personnel with the best possible resources and congenial environment, to enable them fulfil the many demands associated with the performance of their duties.
The COAS indicated that efforts are being made by his administration, to ensure that the accommodation deficiency in the Army is addressed, through the introduction of Quick Impact Projects (QIP) that he would soon initiate, for the provision of more Young Soldiers’ accommodation units, in all Garrisons.

He charged the new occupants of the building to avoid acts that could result in defacing, devaluing or destroying the facility.
On the upcoming 2024 General Elections in Ghana, the COAS seized the opportunity to remind his troops of their constitutional mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the country, and charged them to identify unprofessional conducts before, during and after the elections, such as partisan politics, and avoid them.

The GOC, C/COMD, in his remarks, thanked the COAS and all stakeholders who contributed towards the completion of the accommodation, and pledged his commitment towards working to provide a conducive accommodation environment for personnel under his Command.
As part of his visit to 4 Garrison, the COAS toured the Headquarters, C/COMD Camp, and 4 Garrison Education Centre at Old Uaddara Barracks, to inspect ongoing projects.
