GHANA ARMY’S 6BN CELEBRATES 2024 WASSA

Ghana Army’s 6 Infantry Battalion (6Bn) has celebrated its annual West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) to climax the end-of-2024 activities at Kamina Barracks, Tamale in the Northern Region.

The event which took place on Friday 21 February, 2025 brought together Officers, Soldiers, families and friends to celebrate and appreciate collective achievements of the Unit over the year with the Guest of Honour being the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Northern Command (N/COMD) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Frank Nartey Tei.

The Guest of Honour commended the Commanding Officer (CO), 6Bn – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Jerry Yao Ankuyi, for his good leadership that has ensured cooperation and cohesion among personnel of the Unit, and applauded all personnel of the Battalion for staying united to fulfil their mandate.

He praised them for their exceptional performance in the discharge of their duties to ensure that the Unit’s Area of Responsibility remains safe and secured, and for supporting the Ghana Police and other security services, in ensuring peace and security, during and after the general elections in the Northern Sector.

Brig Gen FN Tei urged the troops to continue striving for greater achievements, by working together to build on the success of 2024, setting new benchmarks for operational excellence, and upholding the values that make the Ghana Armed Forces one of the finest military institutions in the world.

Lt Col JY Ankuyi expressed his gratitude to the Military High Command (MHC), the GOC and the 6 Garrison Commander – Air Commodore Joshua Mensah-Larkai for their support, and guidance given to the Unit for their period.

He stated that, with the support of the MHC and his immediate superiors, the Unit has achieved a lot within the period, among which include the construction of fence-wall around the Barracks, 4 training Squad Sheds for troops, 100-bed capacity accommodation unit for Young Soldiers (Phase 1 completed, Phase 2 under construction), facelift of the Battalion Headquarters, Officers and Junior Rank Messes.

He added that the Unit through its internally generated fund, has acquired a 30-seater capacity Nissan Bus, which will be used as Welfare Bus to enhance the transportation of troops.

The CO commended Officers, Soldiers and Defence Civilian Staff of the Unit for their professionalism and selfless dedication to duty, and urged them to remain committed and uphold the spirit of teamwork, urging them to continue to work together so they can achieve the Unit’s set goals and objectives.

Other activities which took place during the event included, Dressing Competition, presentation of awards to some Soldiers, and honouring the former 6Bn Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) – the late Ex Warrant Officer Class 1 (Ex-WOI) Andrew Yaw Collins by christening the Battalion Parade Square after him.

Present at the event included the 6 Garrison Commander, and Commander, Air Force Base, Tamale – A/Cdre Joshua Mensah-Larkai; Senior Officers, COs, Officers, Heads of Security Services in the Northern Region, Soldiers, Defence Civilian Staff, traditional rulers, families, and friends of the Battalion.
