Headquarters (HQ), Central Command (C/COMD) of the Ghana Army has organized an Inter-Unit Drill and Bugle Competition for Units under the Command to test the level of confidence amongst troops, their ability to timely execute words of command in a smart and uniformed fashion, and to achieve unity among Units, foster esprit de corps, and unit pride in the Command.
On Friday 20 September 2024 at the Agyemang-Prempeh Square, Idris Barracks, Kumasi, competing units drawn from 3 Infantry Battalion (3Bn), 4Bn, 154 Armoured Regiment (154 Armd Regt), and HQ, C/COMD Camp, thrilled spectators with spectacular drills and bugle calls displays, to the admiration of all.
The Guest of Honour for the event, and former Chief of the Army Staff – Major General (Maj Gen) Richard Kwame Opoku-Adusei (Rtd), in his remarks urged that Unit Commanders do all it takes to promote Drill, which he said is an important tool in the military, and must not be relegated in Units’ daily routine.
He added that Muster Parade, Guard Mounting, and Funeral Drills must be positively exploited to ensure that Officers and Soldiers appreciate their values, and reminded personnel to exhibit high sense of professionalism in Ghana’s upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
After appreciating the General Officer Commanding (GOC), C/COMD – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Michael Kwadwo Opoku, and his Staff Officers for organizing the programme, and the participants for wonderful display of Drills, Maj Gen Opoku-Adusei, charged them to avoid acts of partisanship, favouritism, partiality and other tendencies that have the potential of dragging the country into chaos.
At the end of the competition, 154 Armd Regt emerged Winners in the Drill competition, and were awarded an Aboboya tricycle, a cash of GHS12,000, a trophy and a Certificate of Participation; HQ C/COMD Camp placed 2nd and received a refrigerator, GHS5,000, a trophy and a Certificate of Participation.
Third position went to 4Bn who won a refrigerator, GHS3,000, a trophy and Certificate of Participation, and 4th position went to 3Bn, who won a trophy, cash prize of GHS1,000 and Certificate of Participation.
For the Bugle category, 3Bn came first and won GHS500, a trumpet, a trophy and Certificate of Participation; HQ C/COMD Camp placed 2nd and won GHS300, a trumpet, trophy and Certificate of Participation; 4Bn placed 3rd and won GHS200, a trumpet, trophy and Certificate of Participation; while 154 Armd Regt placed 4th and won a trumpet, trophy and Certificate of Participation.
On the sidelines of the contest, the GOC, assisted by the Guest of Honour, commissioned an office block for use by the Command Sergeant Major.
