The Ghanaian Contingents serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), have been lauded for their sacrifice and immense contributions towards the peace process and the attainment of the Mission’s mandate.

The Contingents which operate in the Abyei Administrative Area, have been awarded the prestigious United Nations Peacekeeping Medals at a ceremony which took place on Thursday, 16 February 2023, at the GHANBATT Headquarters, Athony Company Operating Base.
The Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander, UNISFA – Major General (Maj Gen) BO Sawyerr commended the Commanding Officers (COs) of the Ghana Battalion, Ghana Medical Level II Plus and troops of the 2 institutions, for their contributions towards serving humanity, commitment to global peace and security, and the promotion of excellent health care to all in the Area.

He thanked the Government of Ghana for being the first to deploy troops to the area to serve humanity, and to provide protection to the people of Abyei.
Maj Gen Sawyerr noted further that despite the numerous direct attacks by armed elements, Ghana’s Battalion is ensuring the security of the people within Sector South, with a commendable exhibition of high sense of professionalism and dedication, in the performance of their duties.
Maj Gen Sawyerr additonally commended the Ghanaian contingents for a 100% adherence to the zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, citing them for the numerous Civil Military Cooperation activities they have undertaken by extending educational support, aside the daily operational commitment.

Some of the GHANBATT’s activities have been taking keen interest in education within Sector South, with several donations to most of the schools within its Area of Responsibility, commissioning a primary school at Awolhome, after renovating it, and the provision of medical and veterinary supports to the communities.
The occasion was graced by a high-ranking delegation from Ghana, which was led by the Commandant, Ghana Military Academy – Maj Gen Charles Kwadwo Asomaning Abede Awity, Staff Officers from the Force Headquarters, the Ghanaian community and some chiefs within GHANBATT’s Area of Responsibility.
