The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been awarded Ghana’s Presidential Certificate/Plaque of Distinguished Service, celebrating its demonstration of remarkable dedication and service to the nation, at the country’s 2024 Presidential Honours Awards.
Ghana’s Presidential Honours and Awards, aimed at celebrating distinguished individuals and institutions that have demonstrated remarkable dedication and service to the nation, was held at the Accra International Conference Centre, on Monday 30 December 2024, with the Commander-In-Chief of GAF and President of Ghana, personally decorating recipients with the awards.

Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah – Chief of the Defence Staff, GAF, received the honour for the category which saw seven other institutions – Ghana Police Service, Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, United Nations Development Fund, China Africa Development Fund, International Organization for Migration, Ghana Immigration Service, and Ghana Prisons Service – decorated with similar honours.
The honours presented at the event were; the Presidential Certificates of Distinguished Service, Medal for Gallantry, the Royal Medal, the Order of the Volta (Member and Officer), and the Order of the Star of Ghana.

Other distinguished persons honoured were health professionals, creators, political leaders, lawmakers, public servants, leaders in education, financial supervision, public service, legal service, traditional leadership, and posthumous honour to the legendary Marcus Mosiah Garvey – the legendary Jamaican Pan-Africanist.
The award, presented by the President of Ghana – His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to GAF, is in recognition of the military’s extraordinary contributions and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, and underscores GAF’s commitment to serving the country, particularly during times of crisis.

It also testifies to the bravery, sacrifice, and selflessness of GAF personnel, who have worked tirelessly to protect the nation and its citizens.
Among the array of distinguished personnel present at the event included the Vice President of Ghana – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; Inspector General of Police – Dr George Akuffo-Dampare; Chief of the Army Staff, Ghana Army – Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona; Chief of the Naval Staff, Ghana Navy – Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu; Chief of the Air Staff, Ghana Air Force – Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe
