by Ghana Peace

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has promoted eight (8) Senior Officers to the rank of Commissioner of Police (COP), and eleven others to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), after they were noticed to have been long overdue for promotions.

Notable amongst the promoted Officers on Friday 11 July 2025, at the Police National Headquarters Conference Room, was Dr Benjamin Teye Agordzo, who was retired from the Service in 2009, reinstated, and is now retired.

As a symbol of appreciation of the efforts put in for the nation’s security by the Police Service, Ghana’s Minister of Interior, and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase – Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, historically presided over the promotion ceremony, aided by the Inspector General (IGP) – Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Officers promoted from DCOP to COP were; Madam Lydia Yaako-Donkor; Mr Vance Baba Gariba; Mr Sebastian Atsu Wemegah; Reverend Father George Arthur; Mr David Agyemang Adjem; Mr Owusu Donyinah; Mr Martin Kwaku Ayiih, and Alhaji Razak Abdul-Osman.

Those promoted to DCOP from Assistant Commissioner of Police were; Mr God-Act Dodzi Hlordzi; Mr Wisdom Korli; Mr Joseph Owusu Ansah; Mr Joshua Copson; Mr Obed Dzikunu; Madam Phyllis Ama Tebuah Osei; Mr William Wowolo; Mr William Kofi Donkor; Mr Wisdom Lavoe; Mr Francis Christopher Abaka, and Mr Benjamin Teye Agordzo (Rtd).

Presenting a welcome note, the IGP said some of the personnel have been elevated from one rank to the other, whiles the latest cohort to be promoted, have been in their ranks for several years.

He further stated that it is the first time an Interior Minister has supervised such a ceremony, and thus Mr Mohammed-Mubarak’s presence should be seen as the President of Ghana’s quest to correct anomalies in the system, put personnel in their appropriate ranks, and to boost morale of troops.

The Interior Minister charged the newly-promoted not to see their elevations only as privilege, but mainly as a call to duty, and to serve.

He also was emphatic that there are many others who have been disadvantaged, dis-incentivized, and demoralized by the lack of promotions, and that the system is being reworked to make all personnel comfortable to work.

“We have tasked the Inspector General of Police to look through the Service, from Constable to COPs, all those that have been unfairly left behind, will be corrected”, he stated.

He praised police personnel for keeping wake, sacrificing energy, and sometimes their lives, to give peace and protection to lives, businesses and properties, and further lauded the IGP Mr C.T. Yohuno, for adding motivation to the Service.

He promised to help deliver the required logistics needed to support the GPS in its operations, and to pay greater attention to personnel welfare issues so that they would continue to deliver of their best.

Present at the ceremony included the National Security Coordinator – COP Alhaji Osman Razak, and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB).
