by Kofi Ampeah Woode

In a commendable display of humanitarian efforts, the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) donated medical supplies to the town of Rumaysh, situated within the Battalion’s Area of Responsibility in Southern Lebanon, as part of ongoing commitment to supporting local communities, and towards addressing the medical needs of the residents in the township.

The donation on Monday 19 February 2024 to Rumaysh, like many others in the region who have faced challenges due to the ongoing war, is the second donation GHANBATT has made since it inserted into its Area of Operations in September last year.

Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Frank Kwesi Agyeman – the Commanding Officer of UNIFIL GHANBATT 90, expressed the Battalion’s dedication to fostering positive relations with the local community.

The donation took place at the Elementary School Clinic in Rumaysh, with representatives from GHANBATT presenting the medical supplies to healthcare professionals, with items donated including antibiotics, pain relievers, GI Drugs, anti-diabetic drugs, cough syrups, and other healthcare necessities, contributing to the enhancement of the town’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Head of the Clinic – Ms Maria Jreiss, expressed gratitude for the timely and impactful donation, emphasizing the significant impact it would have on the town’s healthcare services.

This initiative was facilitated by the Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) team led by Captain Sylvia Agbenyo, and it reflects the broader mission of UNIFIL, which is, to go beyond traditional peacekeeping duties and actively engage in projects that uplift local communities.

As GHANBATT continues to fulfill its mandate in Southern Lebanon, this charitable endeavour would strengthen the bond between the Battalion and the people it serves, fostering a spirit of cooperation and solidarity in the pursuit of a safer and healthier environment for all.
