JOINT GHANA/TOGO LAND BOUNDARY RE-AFFIRMATION EXERCISE

The Ghana Boundary Commission and the National Land Boundary Commission of Togo jointly organised a two-day community sensitisation programme at Likpe in the Oti Region of Ghana and Yikpa in Togo.

The exercise which was sponsored by the German Government using GIZ as the implementing Agency, on 25 and 26 January 2024, respectively, and forms part of the 4th phase of the ongoing joint land boundary re-affirmation along the Ghana/Togo Land Boundary targeted at an approximate distance of 100km.

The re-affirmation exercise involves the construction of new pillars to replace worn-out/damaged/displaced pillars along the Ghana/Togo Land Boundary.

The community sensitisation programme was aimed at educating citizens of the border communities on the joint re-affirmation exercise and also highlighting the importance of international boundaries to the population.

Major General Emmanuel Kotia, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, emphasised the importance of international boundaries to statehood.

He indicated that boundaries form part of the characteristics of statehood and therefore highly indispensable in recognising a sovereign State.

Among the dignitaries present at the sensitisation programme were Hon Joshua Gmayenaam Makubu, Oti Regional Minister; Hon Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency; Hon Janet Emefa Obro-Adibo, District Chief Executive for Guan District; and Mr Kadanga Patchassi, Director of Land Administration and Boundaries of the National Land Boundary Commission of Togo.

Also present were the Paramount Chiefs of Wli Traditional area (Ghana) and Yikpa Traditional area (Togo), the Chief of Likpe Mate and other traditional leaders.
