by Kofi Ampeah Woode

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has strengthened collaboration with the African Union Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department in dealing with the emerging security threats in Africa.

Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner Political Affairs Peace and Security (CPAPS), African Union Commission, said the emerging security threats on the African continent required the best preventive mechanisms, and collaborative approaches to deal with them.

The Commissioner made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Executive Management Committee of KAIPTC, led by Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant of KAIPTC, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Amb. Adeoye said the contemporary nature of the security threats in Africa was worrying as the continent now faced inter-state and intra-state conflicts.

That, he said, required a multi stakeholder approach and cooperation in stemming the tides, but particularly dealing with the many unconstitutional changes of governments in recent times.

Upon a detailed exposition of the issues surrounding the new direction for the KAIPTC for the next five years by Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Amb. Adeoye said the new Strategic Plan of the KAIPTC must have a causal linkgage to the emerging threats and look critically at peace prevention, robust response strategies, and building strong partnerships.

He applauded the Centre for its inclusion of women and the youth in their peace and security agenda.

Maj General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant, KAIPTC, said because the approach of the Centre and its plans were demand driven, it was important, as part of its new strategic plan to seek the views of its key partners and strengthen cooperation with addressing the emerging threats in Africa.

Such cooperation, the Commandant said, were critical in dealing with the many challenges, including violent extremism and maritime security, among others.

Also, he said the Centre prioritised issues of women and the youth as they played significant roles in the peace and security architecture in Africa.

Speaking on the future of peacekeeping and the emeging threats and events taking place in the Sahel region, Dr. Kwaku Danso, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research, KAIPTC said that an effective regional and global partnership was key in dealing with the challenges of Peace keeping and enforcement.

The parties emphasised their commitment to continue to deepen cooperation on peace and security in Africa.
