by Kofi Ampeah Woode

A delegation from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), led by the Commandant – Major General (Maj Gen) Richard Addo Gyane, has embarked on a visit to Japan, to strengthen collaboration with the Japanese government and other institutions in Tokyo, and to deepen partnerships in addressing security challenges in Africa.

Discussions between the delegation and Japanese officials centered around expressing gratitude to the Japan government for their ongoing support through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to KAIPTC, on issues related to small arms and light weapons (SALW), counter terrorism (CT), violent extremism (VE), and peacebuilding efforts.

Other issues discussed also focused on potential future collaborations on matters concerning women, youth, in peace and security, with the delegation aiming to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in these areas, to further promote peace and stability in the West African sub-region.

The visit is seen as a positive step towards expanding partnerships and working collectively towards addressing common security threats and challenges faced by African countries, hoping that the discussions would pave way for fruitful collaborations, and contribute to building a safer and more secure environment for all.

Towards strengthening Global Peace Partnerships, the KAIPTC delegation engaged with the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Centre, and discussed the mandates of both institutions, identified shared goals, and explored opportunities for collaboration, with key areas including the exchange of instructors and technical expertise on global peace and security.

The KAIPTC delegation also paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Ambassador to Japan – His Excellency (HE) Genevieve Apaloo, to provide insights into KAIPTC’s work, its mandate, and partnerships with the government of Japan and other stakeholders in Tokyo.

The Ambassador and her staff warmly received the delegation and pledged their continued support in promoting KAIPTC and its mandate in Japan.
