The Second Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 2) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has held a ceremony to commission 2 newly constructed Summer Huts (Matambos) for troops at the Battalion Headquarters Athony Company Operating Base (COB), Abyei on Wednesday 8 May 2024.
The officiating Clergy, Captain (Capt) Solomon Aidoo and Imam Lieutenant (Lt) Yunus Abdallah dedicated the newly constructed Summer Huts (Matambos) into the hands of God.

The Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Edward Sarpong Appiah, cut the tape to signify the commissioning of the ‘Matambos’. One of ‘Matambos’ was christened ‘Oppong-Peprah Matambo’ in honour of the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah for his exemplary leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The second ‘Matambo’ christened as ‘ES APPIAH Matambo’ was named after the Commanding Officer (CO) UNISFA GHANBATT 2 – Lt Col Edward Sarpong Appiah.

The CO in his remarks indicated that a section of the Smart Camp Accommodation Project left out a place for relaxation of troops after a day’s hardwork, hence there was the need to construct the ‘Matambos’ especially as troops could not always be confined in their rooms. He said the matambos could also be used for other recreational and social activities of GHANBATT.
The CO took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the Military High Command for their support since insertion into the Mission Area. He also extended special commendations to personnel of the Engineering and Maintenance Detachments for their hardwork and dedication in the construction of the 2 Matambos.
