TRANSFER-OF-AUTHORITY HELD BETWEEN UNISFA GHANBATTS 3 & 4 COs

A Transfer-of-Authority ceremony has been held at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT), to mark the transition of command between the outgoing Commanding Officer (CO), GHANBATT 3 – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Baffour Antwi Sarpong, and the incoming CO, GHANBATT 4 – Lt Col Jacob Nbaamundoh Nanjo.

The ceremony, which also marked the handover between the CO of the Ghana Medical 3 and 4 (GHANMED 3 and 4), took place at the GHANBATT Headquarters, Sector South, on Tuesday 10 June 2025.

The Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander (FC) – Major General (Maj Gen) Robert Affram, was the Guest of Honour at the event which was attended by Commissioners from the various counties in Abyei, COs from Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs), Senior Officers from the Force Headquarters, United Nations Military Observers, amongst other dignitaries.

In his address, Maj Gen Affram extended appreciation on behalf of the Secretary-General of the UN – Mr António Guterres, to the Government and people of Ghana, for their unwavering commitment to promoting peace in Abyei.

He commended the outgoing Commanders for their exemplary leadership, and encouraged the incoming ones to uphold professionalism, then lauded GHANBATT 3 for its effective fulfilment of UNISFA’s mandate since May 2024, and expressed gratitude to the people of Abyei for their continued support.

On behalf of the Ghanaian Contingent, the Contingent Commander – Colonel Elikem Korku Fiamavle, presented a portrait of Maj Gen Affram to him, in appreciation of his outstanding leadership and dedication to the mission.
