UK HIGH COMMISSION DONATES PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT TO GHANA ARMY

The West African Policy Head of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Ministry of Defence – Her Excellency (HE) Alise Hadden, has on behalf of the British High Commission, made a significant donation of protective equipment to the Ghana Army, to enhance the safety and operational efficiency of personnel.

The donation, made at the forecourt of the Odartey-Wellington Block, Army Headquarters, Burma Camp, Accra, on Wednesday 17 April 2024, included Advanced Ballistic Helmets, Ballistic Glasses, Fragmentation Jacketss, Side Bags for first-aids and Contact gloves.

Others were Body Armour without plates, Air-way Managements and Manikin Resuscitation to safeguard soldiers in diverse operational environments, that also reinforces their capabilities to effectively respond to emerging threats.

Handing over the items, HE Hadden underscored the importance of fostering strong partnerships between Ghana and the UK, adding that her country values its longstanding relationship with Ghana, and remains committed to supporting the Ghana Armed Forces.

Amidst a gathering of Senior Officers and troops at the Headquarters, the Defence Attaché (DA) of UK to Ghana – Commander (Cdr) Richard Walters reiterated the significance of bilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges and advancing common interests.

He emphasized the UK’s steadfast commitment to working alongside Ghana in promoting regional stability, peacekeeping efforts, and capacity-building initiatives within the Defence sector.

Cdr Walters further commended the professionalism and dedication of the Ghana Army, in upholding national security and contributing to international peacekeeping missions.

He reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ghana’s military endeavours, and pledged continued assistance in addressing emerging security threats and humanitarian challenges.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of Ghana’s Defence Minister and the Military, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) – Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, commended the British government for the assistance, calling it timely.

He added that the generous donation reflects the strong bond of friendship and cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing its impact on readiness and resilience of troops.

He assured that the equipment would be put to good use to serve their intended purpose of enhancing their capabilities in the conduct of their duties.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Staff Officer (CSO) at the Army headquarters, Brigadier General Barima Brako Owusu, conveyed appreciation for the unwavering support of the UK Army, and extended gratitude towards them for their consistent assistance, highlighting the significance of such partnerships in enhancing national security.

The CSO noted that the gesture was more than just material support, but also reflects the enduring bond between the two armed forces, and their shared commitment to safeguarding the people and preserving peace within the region.
