UN HQ DPO MILITARY ADVISER VISITS UNISFA GHANBATT 2

The Military Adviser (MILAD) at the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York – General (Gen) Birame Diop, has paid a working visit to the Second Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 2) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) as part of a 4-day working visit to UNISFA.

The General’s visit on Thursday 26 October 2023 at the Battalion Headquarters, Athony Company Operating Base (COB), was to familiarise himself with GHANBATT activities in ensuring UNISFA’s mandate in Sector South.

The MILAD inspected an Honour Guard on his arrival at Athony COB, after which the Commanding Officer (CO), UNISFA GH II – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Edward Sarpong Appiah, briefed the MILAD and his entourage on GHANBATT’s Operational Activities in Sector South of UNISFA Area of Operation.

General Birame Diop in his remarks, expressed his appreciation to the Battalion for the dedication and commitment in achieving UNISFA’s mandate in the Abyei Box, adding that Ghana is recognised as an experienced Troop Contributing Country (TCC) in Peace Support Operations and urged the Battalion to bring these experiences to bear in the Abyei Box to help UNISFA achieve its mandate.

He continued that effective teamwork and synergy amongst the Military, Police and Civilian components, as well as other stakeholders, including the local community, would ensure peace and security in the Abyei Region. He expressed his appreciation to GHANBATT for the warm reception, professionalism and dedication to duty.

The General toured the camp with members of his delegation, which included the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander – Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr; Special Assistance to the MILAD – Commander Kylie Robson; the Force Chief of Staff – Colonel Al Achhab Mohamed; Force Provost Marshal – Lt Col KF Mutugi, and other Staff Officers from the Force Headquarters, alongside some key appointment holders of the Battalion and Military Observers of Athony Team Site.
