The Deputy Force Commander (DFC), and Chief, United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Ameer Muhammad Umrani of the Pakistani Army has paid his maiden Orientation visit to the Second Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 2).
The visit on Thursday 18 April 2024, at the Battalion Headquarters, Athony Company Operating Base (COB), Abyei, was aimed at getting himself acquainted and updated with the Operational and Administrative activities of the Battalion.

On arrival, the DFC inspected an Honour Guard mounted, and was subsequently briefed by the Commanding Officer (CO) – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) – Edward Sarpong Appiah, and his Key Appointment Holders, on GHANBATT’s operational activities, in ensuring UNISFA’s mandate in Sector South’s Area of Operation.
The DFC in his remarks, commended GHANBATT for the selfless dedication exhibited in the discharge of their duties in Sector South, and urged the Unit not to relent on their efforts at protecting civilians in their Area of Responsibility, as outlined in the Battalion’s mission, to achieve UNISFA’s mandate.

Brig Gen AM Umrani also applauded GHANBATT for the continuous support to the people of Abyei, through Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities and Community Engagements, admonishing troops to learn the local Dinka language, to help them effectively engage with communities in Sector South, to further win their hearts and minds.
As part of the visit, the DFC toured Athony COB to inspect the ongoing SMART camp construction project, after which he and his entourage were treated to some Ghanaian cuisine at lunch, with some Key Appointment Holders of the Battalion, and Military Observers of the Athony Team Site. The DFC and his entourage also visited Banton Team Site en route to UNISFA HQ.

Members of the delegation included Lt Col Zahid Hassain – Military Advisor to the DFC; Major (Maj) Akbar – UNMO Coordinator at the Force Headquarters (FHQ); Maj Wang Jinan, Maj Asif Raihan, Captain Bilal Akbar – Aide de Camp to the DFC, and some Staff Officers from the FHQ.
