UNISFA FORCE COMMANDER VISITS ATTACKED PEACEKEEPERS AT HOSP

The Mission Leadership Team (MLT) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), led by the Acting Head of Mission (Ag HoM) and Force Commander (FC) – Major General (Maj Gen) Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr paid a visit to the Pakistani personnel who fell victim to direct gunshot attack, as they were escorting wounded locals to the Medicine sans Frontier (MSF) in Abyei.

The Ag HoM/FC and his entourage, visited the victims at the Level II Plus Hospital on Sunday 28 January, 2024.

Two (2) Officers and 2 Soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries while a fifth soldier lost his life in the process, however, despite being injured, the peacekeepers kept fighting to avoid being surrounded by the armed group.

A Quick Response Force (QRF) was dispatched to the location to give supporting fire to the injured personnel and the casualties were moved to Dokura Company Operating Base (COB) and Todach COB, respectively, for first aid, before air evacuating them to Level II Plus Hospital for treatment and preservation.

Staff at the level II plus hospital under the command of Colonel (Col) Dr Monte Kweku Nuamah Kutin, managed to stabilize the wounded and performed surgical procedures on them to sustain the injured, who are in stable condition and undergoing treatment at the UNISFA Level II Plus Hospital at the Mission Headquarters (MHQ).

The Ag HoM/FC, during his visit, reassured all victims of the mission’s constant effort to maintain calm within the Abyei box, expressing his sincerest condolences to the wounded and the Pakistani contingent commander, whiles the local chief administrator also took the opportunity to apologize to the victims, for the attacks on uniformed personnel.

The MLT members that accompanied the Ag HoM/FC were Deputy Force Commander – Brigadier General Abu Syed Mohammod Bakir; Police Commissioner – Madam Violet Lusala and the Officer-in-Charge, Mission Support – Mr Anand Kumar Anand.
