UNISFA GHANBATT 4 COMPLETES MILITARY LEADERSHIP TRAINING, BEGINS SKILLS VALIDATION

Key Appointment Holders of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) Ghana Battalion 4 (GHANBATT 4) have completed a three-week Military Leadership Training (MLT) at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS), Battle Training Camp, Bundase, to equip Officers with leadership skills essential for effective command in UN missions.

The training which began on 13 January 2025, ended with a closing ceremony on Monday 3 February 2025, following after which a seven-week Military Skills Validation Training commenced, to assess personnel deploying for UNISFA and Ghana Medical (GHANMED) operations.

The Commander, Army Training Command (ATRAC) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Stephen Woseadzikpo Kweku Parbey, who was the Guest of Honour, highlighted the importance of the validation training, describing it as a UN-mandated programme designed to equip personnel with the requisite knowledge and skills for mission success.

The Military Skills Validation Training is expected to run until mid-March 2025, as part of efforts to enhance Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) peacekeeping capacity.

Relatedly, a week-long training on preventing the recruitment of children in armed violence, organised by the Dallaire Institute, also commenced at the same venue, with participants form GAF and the Ghana Police Service.

General Parbey commended the Dallaire Institute for its strategic support in enhancing capacity and awareness on preventing child recruitment in armed conflicts.

The Defence Attaché to the Canadian Embassy in Ghana – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Charles Palmer, expressed appreciation to the Commanders, ATRAC, and APOTS for their collaboration with the Dallaire Institute.

Present at the ceremonies included the Commander APOTS – Colonel Reuben Dela Klutse; Course Observer, Dallaire, and Former Commandant, Ghana Military Academy – Major General William Omane-Agyekum (Rtd); Project Coordinator, Dallaire Institute – Mr Jean Babtiste; facilitators from the Dallaire Institute;

Others were the Commanding Officer (CO), GHANMED 4, Captain (GN) Okumanin Kwesi Nsaful; CO, UNISFA GHANBATT 4 – Lt Col Edmund Nana Nyarko Osae; Deputy Commander, APOTS – Lt Col Isaac Keelson Ekow Amoah; and participants from the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
