The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Ghana Battalion 4 (GHANBATT 4), has conducted a medical outreach in Banton, Abyei, and surrounding communities, under the theme “A Healthy Abyei: Let’s Prevent Cholera and Malaria”.

The outreach programme on Friday 22 August 2025, as part of civil-military corporation (CIMIC), was organized to build trust and deepen cooperation within UNISFA GHANBATT 4 and the local population, as well as improve community health and well-being.

The outreach covered medical consultations, treatment for various illnesses, laboratory services, and blood pressure checks, as the medical team also conducted practical demonstrations on the proper use of Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS), mosquito nets and hand-washing techniques, to equip residents with requisite knowledge and skills to prevent cholera and malaria.

To further support the fight against malaria, GHANBATT also donated mosquito nets, insect repellents, and other assorted medicines to the community.

Speaking at the event, the Commanding Officer (CO), and Sector South Commander – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Jacob Nbaamundoh Nanjo highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that the services and donations would significantly protect residents from the dangers of malaria.

He further expressed appreciation to the people for their continuous cooperation and support to the activities and operations of GHANBATT 4 in the Sector, stressing that such collaboration is crucial for the success of peacekeeping and stability efforts in Abyei.

On behalf of the local population, the Alal County Commissioner – Mr Nyan Dol Dol commended GHANBATT 4 and UNISFA for their commitment to improving community welfare, describing the outreach as a timely and impactful intervention, bringing relief to residents, while reinforcing the bond of the Mission and the people it serves.

The gesture is a testament to the commitment of UNISFA GHANBATT 4, not only to peacekeeping, but also to promoting health, unity, and resilience within Abyei’s communities.
