The Rule of Law Advisory Section of the United Nations Missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) has held a three-day training workshop in Records/File Management, for twenty-five (25) National Prisons Service of South Sudan (NPSSS) Officers, to enhance their capacity in accurate records keeping and management.

UNMISS/Corrections Advisor in the Lakes State – Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Julius Quarshie, who was the Facilitator, trained the 21-male and 4-female Officers from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 February 2023, in Prisoners Records/File Management.
The exercise was organized to provide technical support to NPSSS officials of the Lakes State, to enhance their capacity in managing and keeping records accurately, in respect of persons in detention, to ensure effective justice system and promote public confidence in corrections facilities.

The main objectives of the training exercise were; 1) to provide knowledge on the importance of keeping thorough, accurate, and confidential Prisoners records to the Administration and Staff; 2) to educate participants on the requirements of an effective registration and record keeping process at each stage or aspect of the detention:
Others were 3) to provide knowledge on the types of information required for effective and thorough record keeping in Prison, and 4) to sensitize trainees to know the strengths and weaknesses of record keeping processes in NPSSS Prisons.

South Sudan’s Minister for Local Government and Law Enforcement Agencies – Mr Chol Kuotwel, who officially opened the training workshop, expressed gratitude to UNMISS/Rule of Law Advisory Section, for organizing the training to help build the capacity of the NPSSS officials.
He encouraged the participants to be focused and apply the knowledge and skills acquired at the training, to make them better professionals and prepare them for tasks ahead.

The training which saw participants show willingness and eagerness to learn, had the State Director of Prisons, South Sudan – Major General Mariec Chitak, as the Guest-of-Honour at the closing ceremony, with four other Senior Officers, including the State Prison Director (who were part of the training throughout the sessions). At the end, Certificates were issued to the participants.
