A Pre-Deployment Reconnaissance (RECCE) team led by the Commanding Officer (CO) of the United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 12 – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Godfred Asampong, has paid a 12-day working visit to UNMISS GHANBATT Area of Operational Responsibility (AOR).
The reconnaissance, which was conducted from 30 March –12 April 2024, was to enable the team obtain firsthand information about the operations, administrative and logistic situation of GHANBATT in South Sudan, to facilitate tactical decision making for the Battalion, before its insertion.

As part of the visit, the delegation paid courtesy calls on the Bentiu Head of Field Office, the Head of Field Administration Office, Sector Unity Commander, as well as the Ghana Formed Police Unit (GHANFPU), and also embarked on a tour of the GHANBATT’s Company Operating Base (COB), and Temporary Operating Base in Leer and Koch, respectively.
GHANBATT 11 CO – Lt Col Dominic Ampomah, in remarks during a farewell reception held for the visiting delegation, reiterated the importance of the recce visit, and applauded his Administration and Operations Teams, led by the Deputy CO and the Chief Operations Officer (COO), respectively, for an elaborate and comprehensive program.
He was of the conviction that the mission of the Recce Team had been met, and thus entreated the team to spell out the necessary challenges they have been exposed to, in their report to be submitted to the Military High Command, indicating that if these challenges are worked on, GHANBATT 12 will have a smoother tour of duty after insertion.

Lt Col G Asampong, on behalf of the Recce Team, expressed appreciation towards the entire GHANBATT 11 for the warm reception they received during their stay, and assured the Lt Col Ampomah that all the challenges pointed out to him would be communicated to the appropriate authorities, when he gets back to Ghana.
Lt Col Asampong lauded GHANBATT 11 for the successes it has chalked so far, and wished GHANBATT 11 the very best in the remaining months of their tour of duty.

The other members of the Team, were the COO – Major Eric Kuntu-Blankson and the Chief Logistics Officer – Major Harriet Nkrumah. The CO, MONBATT 13 – Colonel Olumbayid was also in attendance at the farewell reception.
