Representatives from the 5th Battalion of the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade (2SFAB) of the United States Army have paid a courtesy call on the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Northern Command (N/COMD) – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Matthew Essien.

The visit at the Headquarters N/COMD, Nyohini Camp, Tamale on Thursday 25 May 2023, led by Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) J Morrow, was to officially introduce the 2SFAB delegation as part of the team for this year’s edition of Exercise African Lion and also discuss issues of mutual interest.
Brig Gen Essien called the US Army, a major partner to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and averred that as partners to combat a common threat, it was imperative that they trained together. He added that the success of last year’s exercise had raised expectation for the coming one.
He however, noted that troops to participate in the exercise from Ghana were inadequate in number, and that it was in the best interest of all to increase the numbers to enable as many troops aboard, to benefit from requisite knowledge the exercise comes with.

Lt Col Morrow on his part, acknowledged the good partnership between the two governments, and also assured the GOC that Ex African Lion ’23 would be an improvement of the past years’ African Lion Exercises, and would also ensure that all concerns raised, were duly addressed for the success of the exercise.
Ex African Lion is a multinational, combined, joint exercise conducted by the US Army, in conjunction with its African and European partners, to solve a set complex trans-regional crisis.
